All classrooms in the University of Ilorin will soon be equipped with the latest smart boards in line with global best practices to ensure effective teaching.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, revealed this last Tuesday (September 25, 2013) during a meeting with members of a National University Commission (NUC) team that visited the University on resource verification exercise.
“All classrooms shall be ICT compliant. Smart boards and latest classroom technology shall be put in place. You will see a new UNILORIN in terms of teaching facilities”, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed.
The NUC team was in the University to verify resources put in place for by the University for the take-off of newly established Faculties, Departments and splitting of some existing Faculties.
The new Departments include:
Department of Architecture, Department of Quantity Surveying, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Department of Water Resources Engineering, Department of Marketing, Department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics, Department of Psychology and Department of Social work.
Others are: Department of Agriculture Education, Department of Business Studies, Department of Igbo and Department of Hausa.
The proposed Faculties are Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
Also, the Department of Arts and Social Sciences education is to be split into two, the Department of Arts education and Department of Social Science education while the Department of Educational Technology is to be excised from the present Department of Science education
Prof. Ambali thanked members of the resource verification team, led by Mr. Sam Ukani, and assured them that the University takes their comment seriously, adding that their observations would be implemented to the letter.
The Vice-Chancellor said, “Your words have been encouraging to us. We shall beef up areas that are inadequate. We shall aggressively pursue and recruit more staff. Offices and laboratories for new departments shall be sorted out before December.”
Prof. Ambali further thanked the team for what he called their “objective observations and compliments”, noting that “this is line with observations made by previous high calibre visitors to the University including members of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on education.”
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed happiness that the resource verification team agreed with the University management on the need to introduce new programmes and split some existing ones.
Briefing the University management earlier, the team leader, Mr. Ukani, said that having gone round the facilities put in place in preparation for the take-off of the proposed programmes, members of the team were “very impressed with what we have seen.”
He stressed that the Library is up-to-date and that the e-library is one of the best in the country with subscriptions to relevant journals.
The team leader also observed that the University staff are highly dedicated, motivated and interactive, stressing that the new programmes are well prepared for take-off.
Earlier during a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor in his office, Mr. Ukani disclosed that the NUC had constituted four resource assessment teams to ascertain the University‘s readiness to start the new programmes that have been requested.
He explained that being a quality assurance regulatory body, the NUC was bent on ascertaining that all academic programmes should be started on a good platform.
The team leader however stated that the team is a partner in progress and not one on a mission to pull the University down.
Other members of the resource verification team on the visit were: Prof. S. Mustafa, Prof. M. Karaje, Mr. Idris Ibrahim, Prof. B. M. Ndoni, Prof. James B. Olaleye, Prof. Oyaziwo Aluede and Prof. Gray Goziem Ejikeme.
Others were: Prof. Timothy C. Mogbo, Prof. A. O. Olotuah, Prof. Obina Enukolia, Mrs. Justina Emerole, Mr. Adamu Mohammed, Mr. Theophilus Ogbor and Prof. Theresa O. Odumuh.

Applications are hereby invited from interested bidders to participate in the exercise which will involve segregation and handling of all types of wastes like domestic paper, glass, cans/metals bottles and plastics. Bags of different colours have been designed to cater for all the types of wastes including garden and domestic wastes which are biodegradable and the recyclables.
From the commencement of the exercise, it would be illegal for anybody to evacuate or take away any waste from the University except approval is given by the Waste Disposal Committee set up by the Management.

” i never knew ASUU was on strike” – President Goodluck Jonathan
Adding to the long list of things the people’s president, ‘oga jona’, isn’t aware of, the president on the sunday journalistchat show said in confidence that he was not aware of any industrial action by the members of ASUU.
In response to our FNN correspondent’s question on when the strike would end, the president responded saying ” strike?, Maku,
which strike is this one talking about?? well to the best of my knowledge there is no strike as my son did not tell me that
his teacher did not come to work”, at this point our correspondent interrupted to point out that the strike affected
federal universities and the president’s son was getting home schooling.
The president promptly interjected saying “isn’t that what all Nigerian students are doing presently? so which one is thisthat you are saying ASUU in on strike……my sister”.
This has led to a wide scrutiny that the president is simply clueless on the state of the nation as when he was asked if
the boko haram leader was alive, he responded saying ” i do not know him o, i have never met him , in fact i can confidently
tell you that i don’t know if he is dead or alive”.

Latest on ASUU Strike: FG Calls For Review Of Labour Laws, Urging Asuu Back To Classrooms
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday advocated a review of labour laws to curtail the excesses of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other labour unions.
The President, who made the call during a Presidential media chat in Abuja, urged the striking members of ASUU to return to work in the interest of their students and the education sector.
The President also said it was inconceivable that lecturers in state-owned universities would go on strike over issues concerning the allowances of lecturers in federal universities.
He said such a situation would not occur if well-guided and well-thought out laws were in place regulating labour union activities.
Jonathan also said that the N79 billion Earned Allowance arrears, which was the major reason for the ASUU strike, was not supposed to be paid from the federation account.
According to the President, earned allowances ought to be paid from the Internally Generated Revenue of the universities, if a good labour law is in place.
Jonathan called on the striking ASUU to reconsider its stand by accepting government offer, and call its members back to the classrooms.
The President reiterated the commitment of his administration to adequately fund the universities and provide the necessary infrastructure to aid the education sector
Jonathan said that the PDP-led administration had done quite well, despite all the odds and challenges
According to him, Nigeria is better off in the past years of the PDP-led government with improved standard of living, building of more federal universities, improved telecommunication, railways and roads.
The President assured that with the commitment of his administration to the privatization of the power sector, electricity supply would become stable by the end of the first quarter of 2014. (NAN)

At a press briefing in Abuja on thursday, the general secretary of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) , Mr Promise Adewusi has said that the association may commence a nationwide strike by Monday if its members are not paid their salaries.
He said that the strike was being considered to protest against the stoppage of the salaries of university workers without any justifiable explanation.
He said that the strike was sequel to a letter written to the Vice-Chancellors of the affected federal universities and Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Adewusi said that letters were similarly written to the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike and the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie.
He, however stressed that SSANU members would be directed to proceed on the strike if the government refused to pay the salaries.
Adewusi advised the vice-chancellors, the SGF and the ministers of labour and education to take immediate steps to remedy the situation.
“Our members in the effected universities have drawn our attention to the non-payment of their August salaries without any justifiable explanations, even as the month of September has almost drawn to an end.
“We, hereby, place on record that our members had long discharged their obligation as workers for the said month and they, therefore, deserve their pay.
“The non-payment of our members in the universities, when some other federal universities have since paid the August salaries, is viewed by our members as an act of punishment against them for working and this has made them restive.
“We, therefore, demand that the August salaries of our members in those universities be paid to them on or before Friday, Sept. 27, 2013.
“Failure to pay by the stipulated date will be regarded as a conclusive act of aggression against the economic rights and interests of our members,’’ he said.
Adewusi said that the union would be at liberty to direct members to stop work, as they would no longer be in a position to continue to pay for their transport to work.
Also, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, the SSANU Chairman in Federal University of Technology, Minna, called on the Federal Government to pay the workers so as to promote industrial harmony.
Aliyu said that it was unfair for the government not to pay their salaries, considering the fact that SSANU had employed dialogue rather than embark on a strike like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU).
He, however, warned the government not to misjudge the union’s peaceful disposition as a sign of weakness.
“Government should not punish us because of ASUU is on strike. If that is what they intend to do, it means they are inviting more trouble in the system.
“We in SSANU believe that through continuous dialogue, contentious issues can be resolved; but for government to refuse to pay our members for two months is a call for confrontation,’’ he said. (NAN)

NUT Threathen Solidarity Strike In Support Of ASUU;Gives FG 2weeks Ultimatum
In support of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday gave a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet ASUU’S demands.
The NUT President, Michael Olukoya, gave the ultimatum in Abuja at the end of the union’s meeting with teachers’ representatives across the country.
The NUT is made up of teachers in public primary and secondary schools across Nigeria.
ASUU had on July 1 embarked on a strike it described as “comprehensive, total and indefinite’’.
The lecturers are protesting the non-implementation of some issues contained in an agreement the union had entered into with the Federal Government since 2009.
Mr. Olukoya said that members of the union would not hesitate to close down the nation’s schools, if the two parties failed to reach agreement after two weeks.
He described the current ASUU strike “as nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing.
“We will not hesitate to shut down the education system in the country, if the government fails to fulfill or honour the agreement it entered into with the lecturers,” he said.
The NUT president said that Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo’s call for a complete over-haul of teachers’ qualification as unacceptable to the NUT.
He said that the blame should be put on the door steps of the employers and not teachers.

The NUT President, Michael Olukoya, gave the ultimatum in Abuja at the end of the union’s meeting with teachers’ representatives across the country.
The NUT is made up of teachers in public primary and secondary schools across Nigeria.
ASUU had on July 1 embarked on a strike it described as “comprehensive, total and indefinite’’.
The lecturers are protesting the non-implementation of some issues contained in an agreement the union had entered into with the Federal Government since 2009.
Mr. Olukoya said that members of the union would not hesitate to close down the nation’s schools, if the two parties failed to reach agreement after two weeks.
He described the current ASUU strike “as nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing.
“We will not hesitate to shut down the education system in the country, if the government fails to fulfill or honour the agreement it entered into with the lecturers,” he said.
The NUT president said that Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo’s call for a complete over-haul of teachers’ qualification as unacceptable to the NUT.
He said that the blame should be put on the door steps of the employers and not teachers.

Boko Haram gunmen on Sunday stormed a college dormitory in Nigeria’s conflict-scarred northeast, firing on students as they slept, the military told AFP, in the latest such attack blamed on the Islamist insurgents.
Security forces were at the scene but details on the number of dead and injured were not yet available, area military spokesman Lazarus Eli said.
The early morning assault targeted the College of Agriculture in the town of Gujba in Yobe state, Eli said.
It was carried out by “Boko Haram terrorists who went into the school and opened fire on students,” while they were sleeping, he added.
A police source, who requested anonymity, told AFP that initial reports indicated the death toll could be high but he was not prepared to discuss figures.
Gujba is roughly 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the state capital of Damaturu.
Yobe has seen a series of brutal attacks targeting students in recent months, all blamed on Boko Haram.
The worst occurred in July in the town of Mamudo, where the Islamists threw explosives and sprayed gunfire into dormitories in the middle of the night, killing 41 students.

Following reports we have gathered of over the past weeks which the strike has been on, we can see that, either the Union(ASUU) has been selfish on their demands, or they are not telling us the truth.
It is important to let them know that, They do not make demands and expect the Nigerian Students to follow them, or support their demands blindly, without knowing what these demands are.
Also, when it comes to Negotiations, You don’t just make a demand, and stand on it, else, its no longer a negotiation, but a command.
If what the Federal Government Says, is anything to go by, we gathered that, ASUU initially led the Public to believe that their demands were sincerely about Improving the Standard of education in our Universities, but the Federal government has rubbished that, and exposing the real fact to the Nigerian Public, saying,
“They initially told us that it was about infrastructure, but it is about allowances. N30b has been released for the payment of their accumulated allowances, and N100b earmarked for infrastructural development. It is important for the public to know that government did not say this is all that it will give, but government says go and start the payment with this amount and let us know the amount it will add”.
What Sort of infrastructural development are the Union Looking for, that N100b is not enough, FOR A START??
With what’s said above, Its either the Striking ASUU members are being unfair with their treatment of the Nigerian Students, or their is something they are not telling us, about their, “Pulling out of the Negotiation Table.”

ASUU Strike Goes On, Says Union
Nigerian University Lecturers said that their strike will go on — 89 days after it began.
This is in spite of the intervention by Vice President Namadi Sambo in bringing the lecturers back to the negotiation table.
The teachers are seeking proper funding of education and the payment of their N87 billion earned allowances.
These are part of the 2009 agreement between the teachers and the government. The government has offered N30 billion for the earned allowances and made available N100billion for projects on the campuses. The lecturers rejected the offer. The strike has been on since July 1.
The latest position of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the umbrella association of the teachers to go on with the strike, was made known yesterday by University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter Chairman Dr. Karo Ogbinika, in a statement.
According to him, ASUU last month pulled out of the negotiation with the Federal Government, which was represented by Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam, based on the government’s insincerity and non-commitment.
He said the Presidency intervened, calling for another round of meetings with Vice President Namadi Sambo last week which, according to ASUU, also ended in a stalemate.
The union said it was disappointed because it hoped the Presidency’s intervention would dampen the tension the strike had generated; but, rather, the government was re-echoing the same stance by Suswam, which was why ASUU withdrew from the negotiation.
ASUU said: “After the meeting on September 19 with the Vice-President, it is clear that the Federal Government is merely paying lip service to education in Nigeria and deceiving the public on its commitment to its transformation agenda.
“The Nigerian people should not be deceived. How can there be a meaningful transformation when the education sector is neglected and gradually taken over by private entrepreneurs, including government functionaries who are busy bulding private Universities with stolen funds in and outside Nigeria. Can these Universities be truly called private?
“ASUU is assuring Nigerians that it will not back out in its struggle to ensure that the government is made to do what is right in the education sector. This is a commitment that all members of the union have vowed to pursue to its logical conclusion.”
The union said it had reported back to its various zones many of which still insisted the strike must continue.”

GOVERNOR AMOSUN CONFIRMS PROF. SABURI ADESANYA AS SUBSTANTIVE VICE-CHANCELLOR OF OOU
The Ogun State Governor and Visitor to Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has confirmed the appointment of Professor Saburi Adejimi Adesanya as the Vice-Chancellor of the University in a substantive capacity with immediate effect.Adesanya, a Professor of Pharmacognosy was appointed the acting Vice-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University on the 27th July, 2012 by the Governing Council of the institution.
According to a release issued today, July 25, 2013 by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, the Vice-Chancellor was described as an erudite scholar with a teaching experience spanning almost three decades in the University system.
It would be recalled that Professor Saburi Adesanya rose to the rank of a Professor in 1996 and was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife from 2009-2012 and has over 40 publications in international and
local Journals to his credit.

ASUU Strike: NUT Gives FG, ASUU 2 Weeks Ultimatum
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday gave a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to resolve the strike embarked upon by University lecturers since 1 July.
The NUT President, Mr Michael Olukoya, gave the ultimatum in Abuja at the end of the union’s meeting with teachers’ representatives across the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU, had on July 1, embarked on a strike it described as “comprehensive, total and indefinite”.
The lecturers are protesting the non-implementation of some issues, contained in an agreement the union had entered into with the Federal Government since 2009.
Olukoya said that members of the union would not hesitate to close down the nation’s schools, if the two parties failed to reach agreement after two weeks.
He described the current ASUU strike “as nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing.
“We will not hesitate to shut down the education system in the country, if the government fails to fulfil or honour the agreement it entered into with the lecturers.”
The NUT president said that Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo’s call for a complete over-haul of teachers’ qualification as unacceptable to the NUT.
He said that the blame should be put on the doorsteps of the employers and not teachers.
“NUT will forever be proud of all its teachers, believing that all employment agencies are corruption-free, disciplined and quality conscious in their employment drives.”
Olukoya also urged the governors of Kogi, Benue and Cross River to honour the agreement they made with teachers on the payment of 27.5 per cent teachers salary structure.

Unilorin Announces Resumption dates for 2013/2014 Session
The University of Ilorin has announced the resumption date for its fresh and returning students for the 2013/2014 academic session. A press statement signed by the University's Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, said that while fresh students will resume on September 28, 2013, returning students, who have been on holidays since June ending, are expected on campus on October 5, 2013. Mr. Akogun disclosed that admission exercise for the new academic session is almost complete and would be completed before the resumption. The statement added that registration exercise for new intakes has commenced in earnest and urged both fresh and returning students to visit the University website for instructions on the registration procedure.

SSANU May join ASUU In Strike Over Witheld Wages
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) says it may commence a nationwide strike by Monday if its members are not paid their salaries.
Mr Promise Adewusi, the association’s General Secretary, said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
He said that the strike was being considered to protest against the stoppage of the salaries of University workers without any justifiable explanation.
He said that the strike was sequel to a letter written to the Vice-Chancellors of the affected federal Universities and Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Adewusi said that letters were similarly written to the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, the Minister of State for education, Chief Nyesom Wike and the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie.
He, however stressed that SSANU members would be directed to proceed on the strike if the government refused to pay the salaries.
Adewusi advised the vice-chancellors, the SGF and the ministers of labour and education to take immediate steps to remedy the situation.
“Our members in the effected Universities have drawn our attention to the non-payment of their August salaries without any justifiable explanations, even as the month of September has almost drawn to an end.
“We, hereby, place on record that our members had long discharged their obligation as workers for the said month and they, therefore, deserve their pay.
“The non-payment of our members in the Universities, when some other federal Universities have since paid the August salaries, is viewed by our members as an act of punishment against them for working and this has made them restive.
“We, therefore, demand that the August salaries of our members in those Universities be paid to them on or before Friday, Sept. 27, 2013.
“Failure to pay by the stipulated date will be regarded as a conclusive act of aggression against the economic rights and interests of our members,’’ he said.
Adewusi said that the union would be at liberty to direct members to stop work, as they would no longer be in a position to continue to pay for their transport to work.
Also, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, the SSANU Chairman in Federal University of Technology, Minna, called on the Federal Government to pay the workers so as to promote industrial harmony.
Aliyu said that it was unfair for the government not to pay their salaries, considering the fact that SSANU had employed dialogue rather than embark on a strike like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
He, however, warned the government not to misjudge the union’s peaceful disposition as a sign of weakness.
“Government should not punish us because of ASUU is on strike. If that is what they intend to do, it means they are inviting more trouble in the system.

TIRED OF STAYING AT HOME (ASUU Strike 2013): BUK Students Protest In Kano
Tired of staying at home, hundreds of Bayero University, BUK, students in Kano, northwest Nigeria, on Thursday, staged a peaceful protest, and gave the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, one week to resolve their issues or face the wrath of Nigerian students.
The students also called on President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to increase the annual budget for education to 26 per cent, insisting that doing so will solve the myriad long-term challenges facing Nigerian Universities.
According to them, ASUU would not be asking for too much if they insist on the full implementation of the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement, which to their views, will bring about the required face-lift needed in the Universities across the country.
Comrade Sani Ibrahim President of Students Union Government, SUG, BUK chapter said Nigerian students must register their disappointment over government’s insensitivity to their well-being, adding, “we decided to take this action because we are tired of staying at home. Our mates in other countries are in school; why should the case of Nigerian students be different.”
In his words, “as part of the struggle to fight for our right is being pursued, I will like to salute our students for their patience while receiving the negative consequences of bad governance. We believe that the delay in resuming lectures in our Universities is not only lamentable but also devastating. We believe even more strongly that now is the time to let our leaders know that enough is enough and we shall wake up and say no to injustice being meted out to Nigerian students.
“Similarly, we call on the Federal Government to respect the 2009 agreement reached between government and ASUU. We also call on the government to review the annual budget for the education sector from eight per cent to 26 per cent, so as to ensure adequate rehabilitation of infrastructures in our Universities, including hostels, laboratories, potable water and constant supply of electricity.
“In the same vein, we are calling on ASUU to give government more opportunity to dialogue so as to quickly resolve the differences for the best interest of Nigerian students.
We are giving ASUU and Federal Government one week to sort themselves out and resume lectures; otherwise, Nigerian students will look for other alternatives to fight for our right. education is our right and no one should take it away from us,” Ibrahim stated.

ASUU Strike: Suswam Orders BSU To Resume, Threatens To Sack Staffs
The Benue State governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam, yesterday directed the management of the Benue State University (BSUM), Makurdi to reopen the Institution and announced the decisions of the state government to suspend payment of salaries to lecturers and sack lecturers that failed to comply.
The BSUM lecturers joined their counterparts across the country to observe the nationwide strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which commenced since June, 2013. They have refused to go back to work despite several pleas by the governor.
However, Suswam said that members of the union in the BSUM have deliberately refused to call off the strike even as the state government has made several appeals for the lecturers to consider the interest of the students. He directed the management of the University to reopen the Institution with immediate effect or risk being sacked.
Suswam made this declaration at Government House, Makurdi during an urgent meeting with the management of the University led by the vice chancellor, Prof. Charity Angya.The VC was represented by the deputy vice chancellor, administration, Prof Nicholas Ada. According to Suswam, “it is important that you as management come because you have refused to reopen the University. I am going to call the Governing Council and insist that they open the University but the first thing I am going to do is that you will not have your salaries paid beginning from this month and any staff who refuses to come back to work would have his or her appointment terminated and nobody is going to collect salary arrears. And so I needed you people to know before you hear it announced on the radio”.
“I am also aware that there was a court case that was instituted against the University by the state government over strike and we are going to take that case up and make you face it because we have completely run out of patience and there is no basis while the children will continue to be on strike,” Suswam said.

ASUU Strike: Private University VCs Call For Resolution
WORRIED by the protracted industrial action embarked upon by public university lecturers under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Vice-Chancellors of private Universities have expressed concern and sympathy for the affected students, noting that there was need to end the three-month-old impasse between the Federal Government and the striking lecturers.
The VCs of BELLS University of Technology (BELLSTECH), Prof. Isaac Adeyemi; REDEEMERS University, Prof. Zachariah Adeyewa; COVENANT University, Prof. Charles Ayo; and CALEB University, Professor Ayodeji Olukoju, while expressing their discomfort, noted that Nigeria’s educational system needs strategic planning and restructuring to regain its lost glory
The VC, REDEEMERS University, Prof. Adeyewa, said “some of my children are also affected by the strike and have been pleading with me to send them to private varsities because they are tired of staying at home. In fact, I want to appreciate parents who are sending their children to private varsities because they are making a lot of sacrifices. I would have loved all my children to attend private varsities but I can’t afford the tuition fees.
“We are not happy that some of our children are becoming grand-parents at home because of the ongoing imbroglio between government and ASUU. The truth is that government and the citizens are not totally committed as the average parent will want to send his wards to smaller African countries to acquire education, where they may be lost to foreign cultures.”
Lamenting the unending industrial action by unions in the country’s public tertiary Institutions, BELLSTECH VC, Adeyemi, said parties going into an agreement, especially between government and staff unions, should put up an implementation strategy that must be acknowledged by the parties.
“This way, if there are changes in the agreement due to the evolving realities of life, both parties must be carried along and be willing to re-negotiate. We need to have a holistic view of the project called Nigeria and agreement should be based on current realities of life because no situation is static. But I insist that there must be constant interaction and mutual agreement between both parties.
“If government says this is what she can afford now, the next thing is to agree on an implementation strategy for the balance. However, we shouldn’t wish away the fact that those in government are also Nigerians and the good of our education system is their concern. It takes a lot to fund education and these funds can’t be reared overnight, making strategic planning necessary to restructure our education system.
Similarly, the VC, COVENANT University, Prof. Ayo reiterated the need for a state of emergency to be declared in the education sector.
“It’s unfortunate that public varsities have been shut-down for over two months, especially at a time when access to and quality of education in the country are low. ASUU should not be totally blamed for standing their grounds, because government needs to show more commitment to education.
“The pertinent question we should ask is- are we able to separate adequate funding of education and quality because with our paltry percentage of annual budgetary allocation less than 10 per cent compared to countries like Ghana, South-Africa, our standards will continue to dwindle. This calls for the need for a state of emergency in the nation’s educational system.”
On his part, the VC, CALEB University, Professor Olukoju, charged government to prioritize funding of education, which is a critical sector of the economy.
“Funding of education is the core issue here but government isn’t keeping an agreement that wasn’t signed under duress. This whole situation is like when someone buys goods on credit and can’t pay on the date he promised to pay.
“I will suggest that government focuses on funding education rather than spending frivolously of things that don’t contribute to the economy as education.
On the way forward BELLSTECH VC called on FG/ ASUU to device a way to end this protracted impasse, saying “if government can’t sustain education at tertiary level, it must declare its position without wasting time because it takes more than just giving peanuts as funds to education.”
COVENANT University VC urged ASUU and government to arrive at a compromise and see how they can utilize the available funds disbursed to the sector. If the desirable is not available, the available becomes desirable.

COEASU Strike: Govt Has 60 Days To Meet Our Demands
THE Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has given the Federal Government a 60-day ultimatum to meet its demands. The President of the Union, Mr. Asagha Okoro, said “the nation would regret looking down on the teaching education sector if concrete steps are not taken to address COEASU’s grievances.”
In an exclusive interview with Vanguard Learning, Okoro said: “we have packaged all the issues facing the teaching education sector. If we do not see concrete action within 60 days, we will employ non conventional industrial methods to make our voice heard.
What we are asking for is not much; most of these demands can be met with as little as N26bn. After a one week warning strike, the Union met with government representatives at the office of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, last Thursday.
Outome of meeting
Okoro, speaking on the outcome of the meeting said: “We were told that our concerns were germane and will be addressed. However, the issues discussed were forwarded to the Minister of State for Education and we were told that a meeting would be scheduled with him as soon as possible.”
The union had pointed out 17 issues to be addressed by the government.
They include:
1. “the suspicious delay in the release of the 2012 visitation white paper;
2. the refusal of colleges managements to recruit commensurate academic manpower to cater for the high dearth of academic staff to meet the contemporary challenges engendered by the rising population of students;
3. the non-harmonization of conditions of service for academic staff of all tertiary Institutions to stem brain drain from the Colleges of education to the Universities;
4. the proposed selective imposition of IPPIS in the CoE and the polytechnics;
5. the truncation of a hitherto functional and innovative Tertiary education Trust Fund leading to obvious regrettable gaps that compromises the critical need for the consolidation of the gains recorded during the past five years;
6. non implementation of CONPCASS, 65years retirement age and Migration to CONTISS 15 in some state CoE; the non conduct of Needs Assessment for CoE to address students and staff needs for the enhancement of quality teaching and learning.”
Others are:
• the refusal of government to approve an Independent degree awarding status for all CoE certified by NUC as being qualified to award degrees in Teacher education;
• illegal imposition of Group Life Insurance underwriters and the non payment of death benefits to our deceased colleague’s families between 2000 and 2013;
• non budgetary allocations for outsourced services and the refusal of government to heed the call for the abrogation of outsourced services and the offer of regular employment to all those in the outsourced cadre and the payment of out-standing arrears to the tune of N2,443,278,543.96;
• the non allocation/release of funds (N2,344,765,841) for crucial academic activities like accreditation programmes, among others.
Meanwhile, in its bid to forestall another strike action by COEASU, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Wogu, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with COEASU which charged the Federal Ministry of Education to, as a matter of urgency, meet with the Union to determine some of the issues at stake.
At the end of the Thursday meeting aimed at reassessing the extent of the implementation of the agreement reached on the 30th of August 2013 between the Ministry of Education and COEASU, the MoU states that all new issues tabled at the mediatory meeting will also be sent to the Supervising Minister of Education as they are specific administrative issues within the Sector which require tackling;
That the Federal Government appreciates the suspension of the seven days working strike embarked upon by the Union due to the intervention of the Federal Ministries of Labour and Productivity and Education on 30th August 2013;
That the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation will demonstrate the workings of the IPPIS platform to the Executive of COEASU on October 29,2013;
That in consideration of the above conciliatory meeting which is at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, the meeting shall reconvene after 60 days to consider progress made in respect of the outstanding issues now referred back to the Federal Ministry of education.

ASUU Strike: National Assembly To Initiate New Education Policies
Worried by the incessant strike by Universities and other tertiary Institutions, the National Assembly is set to initiate legislative educational policies that would regulate frequent industrial actions in Nigeria.
Senate President, David Mark, stated this at the first conference of National and State Assembly Committees on education organized by the Senate Committee on education.
Mark, who was represented by the Senate Minority leader, Senator Ganiyu Solomon, said it was imperative that particular attention be paid to the country’s education sector which, according to him, is in serious need of transformation.
He said: “The persistent industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities has had huge impact on the country’s education system and there is need for the senate to initiate legislative solutions to the problem.
”Issues of educational development have been priority of government and it has called for comprehensive and sustainable policies that will deliver good standards, decent environment and cost effectiveness.”
He, however, called on the federal government and ASUU to urgently come to an agreement to call off the 84 days’ old strike.
Chairman, Senate Committee on education, Senator Uche Chuwkumerije, in his goodwill message, identified poor funding and inconsistent policies as the two major challenges facing the country’s education sector.
Senator Chuwkumerije also reaffirmed the senate committee’s position on education, stating that it was central to the development and maintenance of the different sectors of the nation’s economy.

Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) says he is confident that the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called off.
Okojie, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at a media parley with journalists, said the commission was doing everything within its powers to ensure a speedy resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students could return school.
“We are part of the system and we understand the issues, we are meeting with members of the union all the time and the issues are being tackled.
“So, we are optimistic the strike will soon be called off and our children can go back to school in the shortest possible time.’’
He also reacted to the call by ASUU for NUC to be scrapped, saying “the call is not in good faith as the commission has not gone to sleep over its duties”.
Also speaking on the recurrent disagreements between the commission and some professional bodies over accreditation and running of certain courses by some universities,
Okojie acknowledged that there were issues that needed to be resolved between both parties.
“There is no country in the world where regulatory bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the same time.
“So, it is true we are having problems with professional bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too will soon be resolved and we can move on.
The executive secretary, who said that the commission had closed many faculties not fit to run courses in certain universities, admitted that; “it is not easy to be a regulator’’.

Oluyole Club 2013 Bursary Award For Ibadan Indigenes!
The applications process for the 2013 Bursary Award of Oluyole Club, Lagos has commenced.
ELIGIBILITY
The Award is open to indigent students who are:
*.indigenes of Ibadan.
*.currently in Year 2 or advancing to the 200 level of their courses of study in any Nigerian University.
*.on a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50 and above (2ndClass Upper Division) as at the end of the Year 1 examinations.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Eachapplicants is to send:
1.a handwritten application, which includes contact details- home address (street and location), email address and telephone number;
2.a letter of identification from his/her local government of origin;
3.a letter confirming their studentship, from the Dean of his/her Faculty; and
4.transcripts or examination results for the previous academic session.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
